15 Fastest Marathons in the USA for a PB or Boston Qualifier
Fast U.S. marathons
15 of the fastest marathons in the U.S. for a PB or Boston qualifier
A flat elevation chart is only the start. Weather, pace-group depth, start-line crowding, travel and the B.A.A.’s downhill rules can matter more than a few hundred feet of descent. This guide compares those tradeoffs so you can choose a race that suits your training and goal time.
Last checked: 16 September 2026
Quick answer: Start with the California International Marathon if you want the best all-around recommendation. Choose Erie if you want almost no climbing and are comfortable with a smaller, quieter race. Sugarloaf suits runners who can handle a real climb before a long descent, while Houston is the leading flat winter option. BQ.2 posts the largest historical qualifier percentage, but its self-selected field makes that figure unfair to compare with an open marathon. No race gives you a slower Boston standard.

Which U.S. marathon is easiest for a Boston qualifier?
If you want one race to build a full training cycle around, start with CIM. Its advantages stack up: many runners near common BQ paces, generally cool December timing and no current downhill index. Erie is flatter, and Sugarloaf has posted high qualifier rates, but both are smaller and leave more to weather or travel. BQ.2 is built around one goal, yet its eligibility rules and self-selected field make its headline percentage a poor apples-to-apples comparison.
Important: Boston does not allow a slower qualifying time at a harder race. Your standard is the same at CIM, Erie or any other eligible marathon. A race can only improve your chance of running that standard. Starting with 2027 registration, a course with at least 1,500 feet of net drop also has time added to the result for Boston purposes.
| Race | Previous-result signal | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Last Chance BQ.2, Illinois | 66.7% weighted three-year BQ rate | Highest headline rate here, but a small purpose-built field already close to the standard. |
| Erie Marathon | 33.4% weighted three-year BQ rate | Strong flat-course evidence, although year-to-year weather and a smaller field matter. |
| California International Marathon | 30.6% weighted three-year BQ rate | The most convincing combination of a high rate, many finishers and deep pace groups. |
| Grandma’s Marathon | 865 qualifiers, 11.5% of 2025 finishers | Lower percentage in a broad open field, but a large absolute number of qualifiers. |
The weighted three-year rates above come from FindMyMarathon’s 2026 analysis. Grandma’s 2025 figure comes from the race organiser. The fields are different, so percentages are evidence, not an apples-to-apples difficulty ranking.
What was the slowest Boston-qualifying result that got in?
The useful number is the acceptance cutoff, not the slowest time at a particular qualifying race. The B.A.A. reported that accepted time qualifiers for the 2026 Boston Marathon needed to be 4 minutes 34 seconds faster than their age-and-gender standard. Meeting the published standard alone did not guarantee entry.
For 2027, the B.A.A. added a random Boston Qualifier Selection of about 1,000 places for applicants who meet their standard but miss the final cutoff. That improves the chance of entry, but a cushion remains the safer plan. Check the Boston Qualifier Marathon Finder for current standards, windows and course rules.
How this list was built
Winning times do not tell you whether a course suits your legs, pace or travel plan. The order below weighs what matters to a recreational runner chasing a PB or an accepted Boston time.
Course shape
Flat routes help, but a modest gradual descent can be faster than a flat course with constant turns, bridges or late climbs.
Amateur BQ results
Recent qualifier rates show where successful attempts are happening, while still reflecting who chooses to enter.
Field and pacers
A deep field around your goal time can save energy compared with racing alone for long stretches.
Weather risk
Cool conditions help. Wind, humidity and an unseasonably warm day can outweigh several hundred feet of descent.
Entry access
A perfect profile is not useful if the lottery, sellout date or travel logistics stop you from planning.
Boston treatment
Current certification and the B.A.A. downhill index matter when Boston, rather than only a PB, is the goal.
Research note: No one reviewer has raced every event here. Dates, certification and rules were checked against race organisers and the B.A.A. Recent BQ data and recurring details in runner reports informed the practical cautions. One unusually good or bad race-day account was not treated as fact.
Runner-report check: Reports were reviewed for CIM, Sugarloaf, Indianapolis, Ventura and Mesa. Further reports covered Eugene, Grandma’s, Houston, Wineglass and Glass City. These accounts help with lived experience; official sources still control dates, certification and rules.
The 15 best U.S. marathons for a fast time
Each profile includes the reason to choose the race and the drawback that could make another option faster for you.
1
California International Marathon, California
Best all-around U.S. PB and BQ target
CourseGently net-downhill road
Next race6 Dec 2026
PB fitExcellent
Main catchRolling early miles
CIM earns the top spot because several advantages line up on the same day: December timing, a 366-foot net drop, deep pace groups and a flat final section. It is not a downhill cruise. Runner reports repeatedly describe gentle rollers through much of the first 15 to 18 miles.
- Choose it if you want company near a common BQ pace and a serious late-year target.
- Hold your effort steady on the rollers. Chasing the early downhill splits can punish the final 10K.
- The point-to-point start requires an early bus and can feel crowded, so study the transport plan before race morning.
2
Erie Marathon, Pennsylvania
Best very-flat open race
CourseVery flat double loop
Next race2027 date not posted
PB fitExcellent
Main catchWeather exposure
Erie strips the race down to two nearly flat loops around Presque Isle State Park. That makes even pacing simple. The tradeoff is atmosphere: runner reviews often describe a small, bare-bones event rather than a city marathon.
- Choose Erie if you can pace independently and do not need heavy crowd support.
- The two-loop layout changes your relationship to the wind. A headwind in one section may become a tailwind later.
- September can still bring warmth and humidity. The 2027 date had not been posted when this guide was checked.
3
Sugarloaf Marathon, Maine
Best smaller spring BQ race
CourseRolling, then net downhill
Next race16 May 2027
PB fitExcellent
Main catchRural logistics
Sugarloaf is fast after mile 10, not before it. Race reports consistently place rollers around miles 5 to 7 and the main climb around miles 8 to 10. Once over it, a long descent and a mostly straight road reward runners who kept the opening controlled.
- Choose it if you can run the climb by effort and have prepared your quadriceps for the descent.
- The official field limit is 1,500, so company at an uncommon goal pace may be thinner than at CIM.
- Plan lodging and transport early. The rural setting is part of the appeal, but it reduces last-minute flexibility.
4
CNO Financial Indianapolis Monumental Marathon, Indiana
Best large race without a lottery
CourseFlat urban road
Next race7 Nov 2026
PB fitExcellent
Main catch2026 sold out
Indianapolis gives you a flat urban route and plenty of runners at common goal times without a World Major lottery. Downtown hotels make the start simple. Race reports also flag a busy shared start with half-marathon runners and quieter, wind-exposed miles later in the course.
- Submit an accurate expected time. The first few miles can be crowded.
- Miles 18 to 23 can feel quiet and exposed, so practise holding goal pace without crowd energy.
- The organiser lists every 2026 in-person distance as sold out, with limited charity entries still available.
5
Baystate Marathon, Massachusetts
Best New England fall specialist
CourseMostly flat double loop
Next race18 Oct 2026
PB fitExcellent
Main catch2026 sold out; two loops
Baystate is about running fast rather than sightseeing. The volunteer-run Lowell race uses a mostly flat double loop and attracts plenty of Boston attempts. Two laps can make pacing easier. They can also feel long once the field thins.
- Pick it if you like a focused New England race and are comfortable pacing without a huge field.
- Small rises, bridge crossings and river exposure mean the route is not perfectly flat in practice.
- The 2026 marathon is sold out. The official waitlist is first come, first served.
6
Ventura Marathon, California
Best winter coastal downhill
CourseNet downhill with climbs
Next race21 Feb 2027
PB fitExcellent
Main catchUneven descent
Ventura loses roughly 900 feet from Ojai to the coast, which keeps it below the current Boston index. Do not mistake that number for a continuous descent. Recent race reports describe climbing in the early Ojai loop, most of the drop after halfway, another rise around mile 17 and exposed late miles near Ventura.
- Run the climbs by effort. Banking time before the main descent is a common way to damage the final 10K.
- Train for downhill loading, but also prepare for sun and wind on the less sheltered finish.
- The official limit is six hours. The point-to-point start also requires an early shuttle unless you arrange a drop-off.
7
Mountains 2 Beach Marathon, California
Best gradual downhill without a Boston index
CourseGradual net downhill
Next race18 Apr 2027
PB fitExcellent
Main catchSells early
Mountains 2 Beach starts just above 700 feet in Ojai and reaches sea level over roughly 22 miles before finishing near Ventura. The drop is gradual and remains below the B.A.A. adjustment threshold. It is not downhill every mile.
- Runner reports mention early rollers, so use effort rather than forcing even splits from the gun.
- Long exposed stretches make sun and wind more important than the elevation chart suggests.
- The race says it sells out months early. Registration timing is part of the plan.
8
Mesa Marathon, Arizona
Best desert winter option
CourseNet-downhill road
Next race13 Feb 2027
PB fitVery good
Main catchWarming finish
Mesa offers nearly 1,000 feet of net descent and a cool 6:30 a.m. start. The opening miles feel quick, then a notable climb of roughly 1.5 miles arrives around miles 5 to 6. The second half is flatter, and the desert sun can make the finish much warmer.
- Choose Mesa if a February target fits your training and you can practise both downhill running and climbing.
- Start by effort. Runner reports repeatedly warn that the fast opening can make the early hill and late miles costlier.
- Marathon runners must use the official bus to the start, and registration is limited.
9
Eugene Marathon, Oregon
Best running-culture spring race
Course417 feet of total gain
Next race25 Apr 2027
PB fitVery good
Main catchSpring weather
Eugene’s official page lists 417 feet of total gain. Most runners still call it quick, but opinions on the rollers vary: some barely notice them, while flat-course runners describe the rise near mile 8 and the river-path turns as tiring. The finish on Hayward Field is the detail almost everyone praises.
- Choose Eugene if you prefer a balanced road course over a long downhill.
- Pace by effort through the early changes in grade; perfectly even splits are not essential.
- The 2027 course is USATF and World Athletics certified on the organiser’s current race page.
10
Grandma’s Marathon, Minnesota
Best large point-to-point alternative
CourseMostly flat and gently rolling
Next race19 Jun 2027
PB fitVery good
Main catchJune weather
Grandma’s follows Lake Superior into Duluth on a gently rolling point-to-point course. The long runnable sections and deep field are the draw. The catch is timing: Lemon Drop Hill is modest, but it arrives near mile 22, just as a small rise can feel much larger.
- The organiser reported 865 Boston qualifiers, or 11.5% of finishers, in 2025.
- Runner reports describe quiet early stretches, then stronger crowd support as the route reaches Duluth.
- Lake Superior weather can swing from cool and wet to sunny and warm. Book refundable lodging early; rooms become scarce.
11
Chevron Houston Marathon, Texas
Best very-flat winter city race
CourseFlat with several short rises
Next race17 Jan 2027
PB fitVery good
Main catchEntry availability
Houston is flat by marathon standards, but it is not billiard-table flat. Recent runners point to an overpass around mile 12 and several underpasses late in the race. The organisation, deep field and indoor convention-centre staging still make it one of the easiest big winter races to execute well.
- Choose Houston if you dislike long descents and want plenty of company around goal pace.
- January can be ideal, cold and windy, or humid. Keep a pace range until the forecast is clear.
- The organiser’s 2027 marathon price tiers were shown as closed when this guide was checked. Confirm current entry routes before planning around it.
12
Mercy Health Glass City Marathon, Ohio
Best straightforward Midwest spring course
CourseFlat urban road
Next race25 Apr 2027
PB fitVery good
Main catchLate rise and spring wind
Glass City gives you a mostly flat spring course without major-marathon congestion. The 2027 race will be its 50th running. Recent reports are positive about the organisation, but they also mention a long rise around mile 19 that feels larger than it looks on paper.
- The smaller field reduces weaving while official pacers provide useful groups.
- Spring wind is usually the bigger risk, but save something for the late incline.
- The current marathon course is listed as USATF sanctioned. Recheck the certificate if the 2027 anniversary route changes.
13
Wineglass Marathon, New York
Best small-town October point-to-point
CourseNet downhill with early rollers
Next race4 Oct 2026
PB fitVery good
Main catchRace-morning logistics
Wineglass runs point to point from Bath to Corning. It is net downhill, but runner reports do not describe a constant descent: expect gentle rollers and the most noticeable climb around miles 5 to 6. The route then settles into long straight sections before more turns near the finish.
- The organiser confirms that the net drop remains below the B.A.A.’s downhill-adjustment threshold.
- Some rural stretches are quiet. Independent pacing matters if your goal time falls between groups.
- Every runner must take an official bus to the start, show a bib to board and collect that bib before race day.
14
Bank of America Chicago Marathon, Illinois
Best flat World Major
CourseVery flat urban road
Next race11 Oct 2026
PB fitExcellent with access
Main catchLottery and congestion
Chicago is exceptionally flat and has enough field depth to keep almost every goal pace moving. It can also waste energy before the race settles. Entry is difficult, the opening is crowded and tall buildings can make watch pace unreliable.
- It is a genuine PB course if you already have a place and can start in the correct corral.
- Use course clocks and manual laps rather than reacting to every GPS fluctuation.
- October weather varies. A backup race is sensible if Chicago is your only planned BQ attempt.
15
BQ.2 Marathon Races, Illinois
Best purpose-built BQ attempt
CourseStarting spur plus eight loops
Next race11 Apr 2027
PB fitBQ-specific
Main catchSelected field
BQ.2 is not a typical open marathon. The spring race uses a 1.8-mile starting spur followed by eight 3.05-mile loops, with pace groups aimed four minutes under each Boston standard and personal-bottle access every lap. That setup removes decisions. It also attracts runners already near a BQ and has a 4:30 limit, so its qualifier rate is not comparable with CIM or Chicago.
- Eight loops create 16 aid-station passes and regular feedback, but the repetition is mentally demanding.
- The opening spur contains two short sections of crushed limestone and loose gravel.
- Spring Chance BQ.2 is scheduled for 11 April 2027. Review the current eligibility rules before entering.
Fast races that need extra caution
Some races appear on older fastest-marathon lists but need a closer look under current rules or current event status.
The 2027 race was cancelled after low registration. Its large net drop would also receive a +10:00 Boston index under the current rules, so stale lists can be especially misleading.
Tucson Marathon
Its published net drop sits very close to the 1,500-foot threshold. Verify the exact certified start and finish elevations before treating it as index-free.
Tunnel races
Cascade Express and similar races can be quick and remain below the current index, but crushed gravel, darkness in the tunnel and long downhill loading make them less universal.
Steamtown Marathon
The net downhill can be fast, but late rollers and the need for downhill-specific training make it less predictable than its profile first suggests.
What actually makes a marathon fast?
Elevation matters, but it is only one part of a good PB course. Compare these six things when two races look similar.
1. Runnable elevation
A smooth profile is often more valuable than a larger drop interrupted by climbs. Late hills cost more than early rollers.
2. Turns and congestion
A flat route can still be slow if you weave, brake at corners or spend the first 10 km trapped behind the wrong pace group.
3. Field depth
Company near goal pace reduces decision-making and can protect you from doing all the work into the wind.
4. Weather
Temperature, dew point and wind can change the ranking on race morning. Keep a pace range, not one rigid number.
5. Entry certainty
Choose a backup if your first option uses a lottery or regularly sells out before your training block begins.
6. Training match
A downhill race only helps if you trained for eccentric loading. A flat race only helps if you can hold rhythm for 42.2 km.
Boston rules that change the fastest-race calculation
A race must use an eligible certified full-marathon course and approved timing. The B.A.A. reviews submitted performances, and reaching the standard only earns the right to apply.
- Net drop below 1,500 feet: no downhill time index under the current 2027 rules.
- 1,500 to 2,999 feet: five minutes are added to the submitted qualifying result.
- 3,000 to 5,999 feet: ten minutes are added.
- 6,000 feet or more: the course is not accepted for Boston qualifying purposes.
Course layouts and rules can change. Confirm the exact edition with the organiser and review the current B.A.A. qualifying page before entering solely for Boston.
Best U.S. PB marathons by season
Winter
Houston is the flattest big-race option. Mesa and Ventura add helpful descent, but both demand disciplined early pacing.
Spring
Sugarloaf, Mountains 2 Beach, Eugene and Glass City give you very different ways to run fast, from rural downhill to flat city racing.
Summer
The U.S. offers fewer low-risk summer PB races. Grandma’s is the standout, but Lake Superior weather still decides whether the day is quick.
Autumn
Erie, Baystate, Wineglass, Chicago and Indianapolis lead into CIM in December, giving you the deepest selection of BQ attempts.

Fast U.S. marathon FAQ
What is the fastest marathon in the United States?
There is no universal winner. CIM is the broadest recommendation because it pairs a fast course with December timing and a deep field. Erie is flatter. Ventura, Mountains 2 Beach and Mesa offer more descent but demand more downhill-specific preparation.
Which marathon is easiest for a Boston qualifier?
CIM is the most dependable all-around plan for a wide range of runners. BQ.2 has a much higher reported qualifier percentage, but its eligibility rules, 4:30 limit and self-selected field make that number unsuitable for a direct comparison with an open marathon.
Does Boston give a slower standard for a difficult qualifying race?
No. Your published standard is based on age and gender, not the marathon you run. Course choice affects your chance of hitting that time, and large net-downhill courses can now have five or ten minutes added for Boston registration.
What was the Boston cutoff for 2026?
Time qualifiers needed to run 4 minutes 34 seconds faster than their age-and-gender standard to be accepted for the 2026 Boston Marathon. The cutoff changes with the applicant pool and is not known in advance.
Is the marathon with the highest BQ percentage automatically easiest?
No. A high percentage can reflect a selected field, experienced entrants, favourable weather in those years or a small sample. Compare the rate with field size, course, weather and who enters.
Are downhill marathons still valid Boston qualifiers?
Many are, but the current treatment depends on net drop. Starting with 2027 registration, 1,500 to 2,999 feet receives a +5:00 index, 3,000 to 5,999 feet receives +10:00, and 6,000 feet or more is not accepted.
How much cushion should I target under my Boston standard?
No fixed cushion guarantees entry because the cutoff changes. The 2026 cutoff was 4:34, so simply aiming for one second under the standard is risky. Use your current fitness and conditions to choose an ambitious but realistic margin.
Is Chicago or CIM better for a PB?
Chicago is flatter and has World Major depth. CIM is easier to plan around because it does not use a general lottery, although it can still sell out. If you already hold a well-seeded Chicago entry, either course can support a PB.
