How to use this running split calculator
Choose the race distance, then tell the calculator whether you know your overall finish time or the time you want for each split. Pick the checkpoint interval you will actually use during the race or workout.
- Goal finish time: best when you know the race result you are targeting.
- Split time: useful for targets such as 5:00/km, 8:00/mile or 1:45 per 400 m.
- 1 km: gives detailed road-race checkpoints.
- 5 km: creates a much shorter pace band for long races.
- 400 m or 800 m: useful for track workouts.
What running splits mean
A split is the time for one section of a run. A cumulative split is your total elapsed time when you reach that checkpoint.
Split time
If kilometre three takes 5:05, then 5:05 is the split for that kilometre.
Cumulative time
If your total elapsed time at the 3 km marker is 15:00, then 15:00 is the cumulative split.
Useful race-day shortcut
A short pace band with cumulative times is often easier to use than watching instant GPS pace. Choose only the checkpoints you actually expect to look at.
Choose a pacing strategy
Even splits
Every section uses the same average pace. Simple to understand and easy to compare with course markers.
Negative split
The first 75% is about 1% slower than average pace and the final 25% about 3% faster. The total finish time stays unchanged.
Conservative start
The first 10% is about 3% slower, then the rest becomes slightly quicker so the same finish time is preserved.
Fast start, slower finish
The first 25% is about 3% faster than average, then the remaining distance slows enough to keep the same total time.
Useful split intervals by race
5K
1 km or 400 m. Detailed enough to catch a fast start without staring at the watch constantly.
10K
1 km. Ten clear checkpoints is easy to understand and review later.
Half marathon
1 km or 5 km. Use 5 km if you want a shorter race-day pace band.
Marathon / ultra
5 km or 1 mile. Longer checkpoints reduce how often you need to check elapsed time.
Track workout
400 m or 800 m. Use the per-split mode to calculate repeat or lap targets directly.
Practise your target splits before race day
A calculated pace is only useful if it matches your current fitness. Use training to learn what the target rhythm feels like before trying to hold it through an entire race.
- Short race: practise controlled repeats at or near target pace with recovery between them.
- Half or marathon: include short goal-pace blocks only when they fit your training plan.
- Race week: touch goal pace briefly rather than turning the final workout into a test.
- Course conditions: hills, wind, turns and crowds can make perfectly even clock splits unrealistic.

- Chasing instant GPS pace: short-term pace can jump around. Compare your elapsed time with known markers when possible.
- Starting faster because it feels easy: early race effort often feels deceptively comfortable.
- Ignoring the course: hills, wind and turns can change individual splits even when effort is good.
- Using an unrealistic goal: the calculator can divide any finish time into checkpoints; it cannot tell you that the goal matches your fitness.
- Forgetting the final partial split: race distances rarely divide perfectly by every interval. The calculator includes the shorter final section.
