Polar H10
You care about reliable heart rate first and extra running metrics second.
You hate chest straps or want a rechargeable battery.
The Polar H10 has been around for years, which is an advantage here rather than a sign that it is outdated. It measures the heart’s electrical signal at the chest, broadcasts over Bluetooth and ANT+, and can record a session without a watch.
Few consumer heart rate monitors have the same independent validation behind them. A 2026 validation study found excellent agreement with laboratory ECG for time domain HRV measures in healthy adults. The H10 is also commonly used as the reference monitor when researchers test other wearables.
The H10 is not perfect. Soft straps wear out, dry electrodes can be slow to wake up, and coin cell batteries are less convenient than USB charging. None of that changes the quality of the heart rate data once the sensor is working properly.

Garmin HRM 600
You already use a compatible Garmin watch and want the deeper Garmin running data.

Newer watches already supply many running dynamics. In that case, heart rate and HRV may be all you need from the strap itself. If your watch already produces the running metrics you care about, spending more on the HRM 600 may not improve the part of the data you actually use.

Coospo H9Z
You want a rechargeable ANT+ chest strap without paying Polar or Garmin prices.
You want the strongest independent validation or care about precise HRV during running.
H9Z gives you a lot of hardware for the money: a rechargeable battery rated for 50 hours, Bluetooth, ANT+, IP67 water resistance and coloured LEDs that show heart rate zones.
A low price does not mean the H9Z should be treated as a Polar H10 with a different logo. A 2025 study of a different low cost Coospo chest strap found good agreement with the Polar H10 for heart rate during low intensity running, but poor agreement for some HRV measures while running.
That study used a different Coospo model, so it cannot be pinned directly on the H9Z. It does show why I would be more cautious with HRV analysis than with ordinary live heart rate.
Do You Need a Heart Rate Monitor if Your Watch Already Has One?
Not necessarily.
For easy runs and steady aerobic training, a modern running watch may be good enough. If the number looks believable, your watch fits snugly and you are not seeing obvious cadence lock or strange spikes, there is no rule saying you need another sensor.
An external monitor becomes much more useful when you train by heart rate during intervals or threshold work, or when cold weather makes wrist readings unreliable. It also makes sense when your watch regularly gives numbers that simply do not match your effort.
A Better Sensor Does Not Fix Bad Heart Rate Zones
A better sensor can clean up the heart rate reading. It cannot rescue a training plan built on badly set zones.
Age based maximum heart rate formulas are estimates. Your true maximum can be meaningfully different, and different watches use different zone systems. Before buying a monitor just to train in Zone 2, check the numbers you are using.

How Tight Should a Chest Strap Be?
Snug enough to keep the electrodes against your skin, but not so tight that you spend the whole run thinking about it.
Dry winter air can make some chest straps slow to pick up a signal at the start. Wetting the electrode area before you run usually helps. After the workout, detach the sensor if the manufacturer recommends it, rinse or wash the strap as directed and let it dry.
