Shortlist without guesswork
Which UK marathon suits your goal?
There is no single best race. The useful question is what you want from the day. Open the option closest to your goal, then compare those races in the finder.
I want a faster road course
Start by comparing Manchester, Chester and Abingdon. Their road courses deserve a place on a PB shortlist. Elevation is only part of the decision, so also check turns, congestion, field size and likely weather.
I want the biggest atmosphere
The TCS London Marathon is the obvious answer, but entry is the hard part. The 2027 event is planned for 24 and 25 April as a one-off two-day edition. Secure a ballot, charity, qualifying or tour operator place before making an expensive travel booking.
I want Scottish scenery without a trail race
Loch Ness Marathon is a point-to-point road race finishing in Inverness. The setting is the draw. Race transport matters more than it does at a city loop, so read the bus instructions before choosing where to stay.
I want a hard Welsh road marathon
Marathon Eryri starts and finishes in Llanberis and comes with serious climbing. Pick it for the mountains and the challenge, not for an easy PB. Training should include long climbs and controlled descents.
I want to race in Northern Ireland
Belfast City Marathon offers a large city event. Causeway Coast Marathon is the contrasting choice, with trails and coastal terrain. They are not interchangeable, even though both cover the marathon distance.
I would rather run trails and hills
Beachy Head Marathon, Gower, Glencoe and the Jurassic Coast races are better starting points than a flat city marathon. Compare elevation, underfoot conditions, navigation and checkpoints. Road pace will not tell you much about the finish time.

Location changes the whole weekend
England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland?
Use the Nation field in the finder to narrow the calendar immediately. These notes explain what tends to change from one shortlist to another.
England
The largest selection, from major city races to club marathons and demanding coastal trails.
Scotland
City racing in Edinburgh plus destination events where transport deserves early attention.
Wales
Flat road possibilities sit beside mountain and coastal races that require different training.
Northern Ireland
Belfast provides the city option. Causeway Coast gives you a much tougher trail experience.
Check the race type before comparing finish times
Road marathon
A measured 42.195 kilometre road course is the usual starting point for a PB or qualifying attempt. Certification still matters, so check the current race information rather than relying on the name alone.
Trail or mixed course
Distance, elevation and surface can make a trail result impossible to compare with a road marathon. Some routes also require mandatory kit or have checkpoint cutoffs.
Timed or lap challenge
You may be able to stop at marathon distance during a multi-hour event, but that is a different format from a fixed marathon course. This calendar does not automatically include every challenge that permits 26.2 miles.
Boston qualifying status
Do not assume that every UK road marathon qualifies. Confirm the current course status with the organiser, the B.A.A. and the Association of UK Course Measurers certificate search.
Avoid the preventable race weekend problems
Plan the start line before booking the hotel
A hotel can look central on a tourism map and still be awkward on race morning. Work through these checks before choosing the cheapest non-refundable room.
1. Make sure you have an entry
A ballot application is not a race place. Charity, qualifying and tour operator entries also have their own costs and conditions. Confirm the entry before building the trip around it.
2. Map both the start and finish
Point-to-point races can finish far from the start. Check bag drop, shuttle buses, road closures and the earliest Sunday train. That information should guide the hotel choice.
3. Read the bib collection rules
Some races require collection on the previous day. Others allow race morning pickup. Find the deadline and identification requirements before fixing your arrival time.
4. Check cutoff and course support
Look at the final limit and any earlier checkpoint closures. Trail races may also have kit rules, fewer aid stations and long gaps without easy spectator access.

How races get into this calendar
A race is included when we can find a published date, a full marathon distance and a working organiser page. Road, trail and mixed courses are labelled separately because they should not be compared as though they offer the same experience.
The database currently contains 43 UK race editions. It is a checked list, not a claim that every small local marathon has been found. Virtual races, ultra-only events and races without a confirmed marathon date are left out. The official organiser page always wins if something changes.

UK marathon calendar FAQ
When is the main UK marathon season?
Spring and autumn contain many of the larger road marathons. April and May are busy, followed by another strong period from September into November. Trail and challenge events make the wider calendar more varied.
What is a good UK marathon for a first attempt?
Look for a course that matches your training, a generous enough cutoff and a simple race morning. A large race may provide deeper crowd support. A smaller one can feel calmer and be easier to navigate.
Can I enter the London Marathon directly?
Most runners need an available route such as the ballot, a charity place, a qualifying place or an approved tour operator. A ballot application does not guarantee entry. Read the current rules for the edition you want to run.
Does the page include every UK marathon?
No. It contains dated races with traceable organiser information. Some small events and flexible distance challenges may be missing. That is more honest than padding the list with virtual races, ultras or events without a confirmed marathon date.
How current are the dates?
The calendar was checked on 18 September 2026. Organisers can still move dates, alter routes or change registration windows. Follow the official race link before paying for anything that cannot be changed.
