How to use this Mexico half marathon calendar

  1. Start with a month or state. This removes races that do not fit your travel window or location.
  2. Add a course or goal filter only if the list is still long. Mexico’s climate and elevation vary widely, so location matters as much as the race name.
  3. Compare two or three races. Review the date, location and course tags together. Then open each official source to confirm registration, distance, cutoff, packet pickup and route.

Updated October 3, 2026: This calendar currently includes 20 curated Mexican half marathons and 21K races, not every local event. We add a date after finding it on an official organiser, registration or governing-body source. When the next edition has not been announced, the race is marked “Next date not announced” instead of being moved forward by one year. For example, official Mexico City sources still showed the July 12, 2026 edition when this page was checked, so its next date remains unconfirmed. Always check the official source before paying for entry or travel.

Choose the kind of Mexico half marathon you want

Major city races

Mexico City and Guadalajara are strong starting points if you want a large urban event. Puebla, Querétaro, Monterrey, León, Mérida and other regional centres can also offer a city-race experience. Check the field limit, road closures, start waves and packet-pickup location before choosing by city alone.

Coastal destination races

Los Cabos, Cancún, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlán, Veracruz and Riviera Nayarit can turn a race into a longer trip. The catch is often heat, humidity or strong sun. Check the race-hour forecast, start time and aid-station plan before setting a time goal.

A faster-time attempt

A flat-looking route is only part of the picture. Confirm that the course is measured to 21.0975 km, then look at elevation, turns, crowding, typical weather and the official cutoff. A sea-level runner may find a high-elevation course harder even when the profile appears gentle.

A 21K name does not tell you everything

Mexican race names often use 21K as a short label for a half marathon. The official half marathon distance is 21.0975 kilometres. If an exact or certified distance matters to you, check the current route and race rules instead of relying on the event name.

Certification can matter when you are chasing a personal best or need an accepted result for another event. It does not automatically make a course flat, cool or easy. Course changes can also affect an edition that used a certified route in an earlier year.

Registration and packet pickup can decide the trip

Do not assume that finding a race means you can register at any time. Some events sell entries until a field limit is reached. Others use registration windows, different links for national and international runners, or separate requirements for elite and recreational fields. The official Mexico City 21K site, for example, displayed separate national and international registration paths for its 2026 edition.

Packet pickup deserves its own check. The 2026 Guadalajara Half Marathon rules required each runner to collect their own kit with photo identification and a registration QR code. The rules did not allow race-day pickup or entry reassignment. Future editions may be different, but this is a good example of why old blog posts are not enough.

Check these details before you pay

  • Entry status and field limit: open, sold out, waiting list or not yet announced.
  • Participant category: recreational, qualified, elite, wheelchair or another para-athlete category.
  • Minimum age: many major events are adult races, but the exact rule belongs to the organiser.
  • Packet pickup: dates, location, photo ID, confirmation code and whether personal pickup is required.
  • Transfers and refunds: check whether the entry may be reassigned, deferred or refunded.
  • Cutoff and sweep schedule: look for both the finish limit and any kilometre-by-kilometre closure times.
  • What is included: shirt sizing, timing chip, insurance, bag drop, on-course fluids and finisher medal.

Useful Spanish terms on Mexican race pages

  • Convocatoria: the official event notice or rule document. Read this before registering.
  • Inscripción or inscripciones: registration or entries.
  • Entrega de kits or entrega de números: packet or race-number pickup.
  • Cupo: the participant limit or remaining capacity.
  • Tiempo límite: the time limit. Retaguardia may refer to the sweep or course-closure schedule.
  • Ruta: the course. Look for a current map and elevation profile.
  • Deslinde: a waiver or release of liability.

Plan for elevation, heat and air quality

Mexico is not one climate zone. Coastal races may be warm and humid near the start. Inland cities can sit much higher and feel cooler or drier. Mexico City’s official tourism site lists the city at about 2,240 metres above sea level and notes that some visitors may feel the effects of altitude.

If you normally train near sea level, do not assume your usual half marathon pace will feel the same at elevation. Arrive with room to adjust, keep the first kilometres controlled and pay attention to how you feel. Review the Mexico City altitude guidance, and get individual medical advice if altitude or heat creates a health concern for you.

  • Check the forecast for the actual start hour, not only the day’s high temperature.
  • Review humidity, sun exposure, elevation and air quality as separate factors.
  • Look at the official drink-station plan before deciding what you will carry.
  • Use the running outfit calculator as a starting point, then adjust for sun, humidity and your own heat tolerance.

Travel checks for a race in Mexico

Confirm your race entry before booking non-refundable travel. Then check the start and finish locations, packet-pickup deadline and road closures. An early start can make a hotel near the course more useful than a cheaper room across the city.

  • Entry documents: use Mexico’s official entry-requirements page and advice for your own nationality. Do not rely on an old travel post.
  • Travel advice: check current national and state-level guidance. Canadian readers can use the Government of Canada Mexico advisory, which may list different advice by state.
  • Local time: confirm the time zone for the race city and every flight connection. Do not assume all of Mexico uses the same clock rules.
  • Payment: check whether the price is in Mexican pesos, whether processing fees are added and whether your card supports the transaction.
  • Insurance: understand what the race’s participant coverage includes and arrange suitable travel medical insurance for the rest of the trip.

Build the training and race-day plan

  • Use the fixed half marathon training plan, or build a schedule around your race date, weekly running and available days with the free Running Training Plan Creator.
  • Test a realistic goal with the race pace calculator, then prepare kilometre targets with the split calculator. Adjust the plan when heat, humidity or elevation makes even pacing unrealistic.
  • Choose shoes you have already worn on longer runs. Start with the long-distance running shoe guide if your current pair is not working.
  • Practise fuel and fluids before travelling. The energy gel guide compares options, while the organiser’s aid-station plan tells you what will actually be on the course.
  • Keep race shoes, clothing, medication, identification and essential fuel in your carry-on when you fly.

Mexico half marathon FAQ

Are all Mexico half marathon dates confirmed?

No. A confirmed date appears with an official source and checked date. An established race stays in the finder as “Next date not announced” when its organiser has not published the next edition. We do not estimate a future date from the previous year’s weekend.

Why do so many Mexican races use 21K in the name?

It is a common short label for a half marathon. The official half marathon distance is 21.0975 km. Check the current rules and course certification if an exact measured distance matters to your goal.

Can international runners enter half marathons in Mexico?

Many events accept international recreational runners, but each race sets its own entry process. Some provide a separate international registration link. Elite, qualified and para-athlete fields may require extra documents, so choose the correct category and read the current convocatoria.

Will I need to collect my own race packet?

Possibly. Some organisers require personal pickup with photo identification and a registration code, and may not hand out packets on race morning. Check the location and closing time before booking your arrival flight.

How does Mexico City’s altitude affect a half marathon?

Mexico City sits at about 2,240 metres above sea level. Runners arriving from lower elevations may find their normal pace feels harder. Keep your goal flexible, control the early pace and seek individual medical advice if altitude is a concern for you.

How do I compare two Mexico half marathons?

Select two or three races on their cards, then open the comparison view. Compare the date, state, course and goal tags first. Use the official links to check entry price, distance, elevation, start time, cutoff and packet pickup.

What does “Next date not announced” mean?

It means the race is established and relevant to the calendar, but we could not find a confirmed next date from an official source. It does not mean the event is cancelled. Open the race link for the newest announcement.

How current is this Mexico calendar?

This page was checked on October 3, 2026 and contained 20 curated races. Race cards show their official source and checked date. Because dates, courses, entry limits and pickup rules can change, confirm the current details again before registering or booking travel.
