Where to Stay for CIM 2026: Hotels, Start Buses & Maps – California International Marathon
California International Marathon 2026 trip planner
Where should you stay for CIM?
For most first-time CIM runners, Downtown Sacramento is the easiest base. You can walk to the expo and the earliest start buses, then return to your room after finishing at the State Capitol. Folsom is the better choice when extra sleep matters more than the post-race walk.
Quick answer: Choose Downtown Sacramento if you want the simplest complete weekend. Choose Folsom if you want a later bus and 30 to 60 more minutes in bed. Choose Point West only when the hotel saving is worthwhile or you book one of the partner hotels served by Location B. A downtown Airbnb or other vacation rental can work well for a group, but the exact address must be walkable to the official bus pickup.

What is confirmed for CIM 2026?
- Race date: Sunday, December 6, 2026.
- Start time: 7:00 a.m.
- Route: A point-to-point marathon from Folsom to the California State Capitol in Sacramento.
- Course: USATF certified, Boston qualifying and net downhill by 366 feet (111.5 metres).
- Time limit: The current official start page states a six-hour course cutoff, with sweep runners crossing the start at 7:30 a.m.
- Start access: Runners cannot drive or be dropped at the start. Spectators are not allowed there.
Downtown vs Folsom vs Point West
CIM is unusual because the start and finish are 26.2 miles apart. The best area is not simply the one closest to the start. It is the one that makes both ends of the day manageable.
| Area | Best for | Start bus | After the finish | Main catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Downtown Sacramento | Most first-timers, solo runners, spectators and car-free trips | Location A, all buses leave by 4:30 a.m. | Walk back to the room | Earliest alarm and strong hotel demand |
| Folsom | More sleep, suburban food options and travellers with a car or supporter | Locations C and D, 5:00 to 5:30 a.m.; Lake Natoma Inn bus at 5:30 | Return bus to C or D, or a planned pickup outside closures | Your room is far from the finish |
| Point West / Cal Expo | Partner-hotel transport or a meaningful room saving | Location B, all buses leave by 5:00 a.m. | Official return bus is currently listed | Less walkable and not close to the finish |
| Granite Bay / Roseville | Locals or travellers with a specific drop-off plan | Location E, 5:15 to 6:15 a.m. | No simple visitor default | Not the best base for most out-of-town runners |
Our pick for most visitors: Downtown wins because the hardest part of CIM logistics comes after the race. Getting onto an early official bus is inconvenient. Waiting for a return bus in tired legs, while your room sits in Folsom, can be worse.
What past CIM runners repeatedly report
Official information tells you what should happen. Runner reports reveal which parts of the weekend tend to matter. We compared current race guidance with public discussions on Reddit and LetsRun, a large set of FindMyMarathon reviews, RaceRaves reports and detailed first-person recaps.
The clear pattern: Downtown runners value walking to the expo, bus and finish. Folsom runners value the extra sleep and nearby restaurant clusters. Both choices work. The wrong choice is booking a room without mapping the exact bus and post-race route.
Downtown feels easier after the race
Many runners say the early bus is worth it because they can walk to the expo, eat nearby and head straight back to a shower after finishing. Supporters also have a simpler base.
Folsom buys useful sleep
Reviews often mention 30 to 60 extra minutes in bed. The hotel cluster near Iron Point Road also gives runners familiar food and grocery choices the night before.
Arrive at the bus early
Most reports describe CIM transport as organised. A smaller number describe late buses or anxious waits in past years. Build a buffer and do not plan around the final possible departure.
The course is not a free downhill ride
Runners repeatedly warn about rolling hills, early excitement and tired legs near the J Street bridge. The net drop helps, but patient pacing still matters.
One current Reddit discussion included runners who favoured the Hyatt, downtown hotels and even a downtown Airbnb. Others preferred Folsom chains or Lake Natoma Inn. The most consistent advice was not a hotel brand. It was to book early, stay close to the correct bus, and avoid a race-day checkout if possible.
Hotels and vacation rentals worth considering
The hotels below are examples from the official CIM lodging page, not paid rankings. Availability, room blocks, prices and transportation can change. Always compare the final price and the exact race-morning plan.
Downtown partner hotels
Headquarters hotel
Sheraton Grand Sacramento
At 1230 J Street, it is close to the convention centre and Location A bus loading.
Verify: total price, cancellation window and race-day checkout.
Finish-side choice
Hyatt Regency Sacramento
At 1209 L Street, it balances access to the expo, Location A and the Capitol finish area.
Verify: the actual finish exit and your room-block terms.
Downtown alternative
Holiday Inn Sacramento Downtown Arena
At 300 J Street, it can be worth comparing when the central partner hotels are expensive.
Verify: the walk to Location A and any parking charge.
Folsom partner hotels
The official list includes Lake Natoma Inn, Hilton Garden Inn, Larkspur Landing, Staybridge Suites, Fairfield Inn and Suites, Courtyard, Residence Inn and Hampton Inn and Suites. Their addresses do not all connect to the same bus in the same way.
Hotel-only bus
Lake Natoma Inn
The current transportation page lists a 5:30 a.m. bus from the hotel for guests.
Verify: that the service remains in the final 2026 instructions.
Location C area
Hilton Garden Inn or Larkspur Landing
Both are on Iron Point Road near the general Location C address.
Verify: the safe walking route, exact loading point and early breakfast.
Location D area
Courtyard or Residence Inn Folsom
These sit near the East Bidwell side of Iron Point Road and the general Location D area.
Verify: the current route to the Sam’s Club loading area and Sunday checkout.
Point West partner hotels
Fairfield Inn and Suites Cal Expo is at the published Location B address, 1780 Tribute Road. TownePlace Suites and Courtyard Cal Expo are next door. DoubleTree Sacramento and Hilton Sacramento Arden West are also on the official partner list, with hotel-specific bus notes on the transportation page.
Should you book an Airbnb or vacation rental for CIM?
Yes, but only as a secondary option. A vacation rental can beat a hotel for a family or group that wants a kitchen, laundry and a shared living space. One runner in a recent CIM discussion said they had used downtown Airbnbs twice and walked to the buses without trouble. That is useful experience, but it does not make every downtown listing a good choice.
A rental is worth checking when
- Three or more people can share the total cost.
- You need a kitchen for a familiar pre-race meal.
- Laundry matters for a longer California trip.
- The exact downtown address is an easy walk to Location A.
- The host has many recent reviews and a clear cancellation policy.
A hotel is safer when
- You are travelling alone.
- You want luggage storage, a front desk or late-checkout help.
- You want partner-hotel bus service.
- You do not know Sacramento well.
- A rental’s cleaning and service fees erase the saving.
CIM start buses without the guesswork
Your bib is your ticket on the official runner bus. The transport is free, and runners may use the location that works for their stay. There is no vehicle access to the start, no runner drop-off there and no start-area gear check.
| Pickup | Current departure | Best for | Address or key note |
|---|---|---|---|
| A: Convention Center | All buses leave by 4:30 a.m. | Downtown and finish-area stays | Behind the SAFE Credit Union Convention Center near K and 13th |
| B: Point West | All buses leave by 5:00 a.m. | Point West partner hotels | 1780 Tribute Road, with separate notes for Hilton and DoubleTree guests |
| C: Folsom | Continuous 5:00 to 5:30 a.m. | West Folsom and Highway 50 corridor | 261 Iron Point Road at Folsom Boulevard |
| D: Folsom | Continuous 5:00 to 5:30 a.m. | East Bidwell hotel cluster | 2475 Iron Point Road at East Bidwell Drive |
| E: Granite Bay | Continuous 5:15 to 6:15 a.m. | Local Highway 80 corridor drop-offs | 6845 Douglas Boulevard, Granite Bay |
A low-stress race-morning plan
- Save a screenshot of your pickup map before leaving home.
- Walk the route from your door to the bus on Saturday.
- Set two alarms and aim for an earlier bus, not the last one.
- Carry breakfast, fluids and throwaway warmth in a small bag you can manage.
- Use gear check before reaching the start if you need belongings at the finish.
- Leave time for toilets and staging. Some runners report quick lines, while others waited 20 minutes or more.
Past-runner tip: Runners on the downtown buses often report being allowed to remain on the bus to stay warm after arrival. Treat that as experience, not a guarantee. Dress so you can wait outside if the 2026 procedure changes.
Expo and packet pickup
The 2026 CIM Expo is scheduled for the SAFE Credit Union Convention Center at 1401 K Street, Sacramento. Packet pickup is not available on race morning.
| Day | Published hours | Practical advice |
|---|---|---|
| Friday, December 4 | 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. | Best choice if your flight allows it. You keep Saturday calmer. |
| Saturday, December 5 | 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. | Arrive with time to solve any bib or identification problem. |
- Bring government-issued photo identification.
- Have your confirmation QR code ready.
- If another person is collecting your packet, follow the official copy-of-ID and QR-code instructions exactly.
- Do not book a Saturday arrival that depends on everything going perfectly before the 5:00 p.m. close.
Why old guides can be wrong: The 2025 expo moved to Cal Expo. The current 2026 page lists the Convention Center again. Use the 2026 race page and final runner email, not last year’s map.
Getting from the airport and deciding on a car
Sacramento International Airport (SMF) is about 12 miles from downtown. The airport lists SacRT Route 142 as an express service to downtown, with Yolobus 42A and 42B adding airport service. Check the current schedule for your arrival day.
Downtown stay
You usually do not need a rental car. Airport transit or rideshare can reach your hotel, then most key race locations are walkable.
Folsom stay
A car can make the expo, groceries and meals easier. It still cannot take the runner to the start. Use C, D or the hotel bus.
Point West stay
A car is useful because the area is less walkable, but parking and road closures still need a plan on Sunday.
Best no-car plan: Fly into SMF, stay downtown, collect your bib on Friday or Saturday, walk to Location A before 4:30 a.m., then walk back after the finish.
Course, pacing and December weather
CIM is a fast course, but “net downhill” can create the wrong picture. The official description says gentle rolling hills with a flat, fast finish. Runner reports agree that the early rollers and the late J Street bridge can punish an aggressive first half.
Pacing takeaway
Run the first miles by effort. Do not bank time on the early descents. Save enough for the bridge and the flat final kilometres into Sacramento.
Packing takeaway
Prepare for a cold wait, possible rain or wind, then warmer running conditions. Pack gloves, a disposable outer layer and a simple wet-weather option. Check the forecast late, not weeks out.
If a Boston qualifier is the goal, read our fastest marathons in the USA comparison before assuming CIM is automatically the easiest choice. Course fit, weather and pacing still matter.
Plan the hour after the finish
This is where your lodging choice pays off. The finish is at Capitol Mall, followed by a controlled finisher area, food, gear pickup and a reunion zone. You do not stop moving the moment your watch reads 26.2.
- Choose a reunion letter with your supporters before race morning.
- Do not depend on immediate phone service in a crowd.
- Collect gear and food before leaving the secured runner area.
- If staying downtown, follow the pre-mapped walking route to your room.
- If staying in Folsom or Point West, use the final instructions to find return-bus loading.
Current return-bus window: The race transportation page lists continuous service to B, C and D from 10:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. The detailed finish page is still marked as 2025 information, so confirm the exact 2026 loading street.
Staying Sunday night is the best solution when the budget allows it. You avoid packing before a marathon, asking a tired body to meet an early checkout, or storing luggage across town.
A practical spectator plan
Spectators cannot enter the start area. The easiest plan is to sleep downtown, let the runner take the bus alone, and focus on one cheer location plus the finish. Trying to see four points on a closed point-to-point course creates more stress than value.
Simplest
Finish only
Best for children, mobility limits or anyone unfamiliar with Sacramento. Arrive early, enter from the south side and use the planned reunion letter.
Balanced
One official cheer zone plus finish
Pick a zone from the official list, calculate the runner’s arrival window and leave a generous travel buffer for closures.
Local knowledge
Multiple course stops
Only attempt this with a driver who understands the closures. Use the official road schedule and remember that parking can take longer than the drive.
The official spectator page currently lists cheer zones from mile 3.1 through mile 25. The finish information says spectators enter from N Street at 9th or 10th and cannot cross the course between 5th and 15th along L Street. Recheck the 2026 map.
A simple CIM race-weekend schedule
| Day | Runner plan | What not to leave late |
|---|---|---|
| Friday, December 4 | Arrive if possible, check in and collect the bib between noon and 7:00 p.m. | Test the trip from the airport and buy breakfast supplies. |
| Saturday, December 5 | Use the expo between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., walk the bus route, prepare clothing and eat early. | Do not experiment with an unfamiliar meal or plan a long sightseeing day. |
| Sunday, December 6 | Take the official runner bus, start at 7:00 a.m., follow the reunion plan and recover. | Do not assume your supporter can reach the start or cross the finish course freely. |
| Monday, December 7 | Travel home if your legs and schedule allow it. | Avoid a tight, early flight after a late Sunday celebration. |

CIM booking checklist
- Book a refundable room early, then compare again if rates change.
- Map the exact door-to-bus route. The hotel neighbourhood is not precise enough.
- Ask whether early breakfast or coffee will be available before your bus.
- Confirm Sunday checkout, luggage storage and the cost of staying Sunday night.
- Read every mandatory fee before comparing a hotel with a vacation rental.
- For a rental, check the permit, recent reviews, cancellation terms, stairs and quiet-hour complaints.
- Save the official transportation page and final runner instructions offline.
- Choose a supporter reunion letter and a backup meeting point.
- Do not schedule a tight Saturday arrival or early Sunday checkout.
- Check the forecast and road closures during race week.
If you only do three things: stay Sunday night, choose the exact bus before booking, and aim for an earlier departure than the final bus.
CIM trip planning FAQ
Is it better to stay near the CIM start or finish?
Stay near the finish in Downtown Sacramento for the simplest full weekend. Stay in Folsom when a later bus and extra sleep matter more than walking back after the race.
Can I walk from a Folsom hotel to the CIM start?
No plan should depend on that. Runners cannot drive or be dropped at the start, and the official race directs everyone to its buses. Even Lake Natoma Inn uses a hotel bus.
Can I stay in an Airbnb for CIM?
Yes. A permitted downtown rental can work well for a group if the exact address is walkable to Location A. A Folsom rental only works after you map it to C or D. Do not book based on “near the start.”
Do I need a rental car?
Not for a downtown stay. A car can be useful in Folsom or Point West, but the runner must still use official transport to the start.
Can someone drop me at the CIM start?
No. The official guidance says there is no vehicle access and no runner drop-off at the start. Use one of the five bus pickup zones.
Where should supporters stay?
Downtown is best for most supporters because the start is closed to spectators and the finish is in Sacramento. They can sleep later, reach the finish area and meet the runner without needing a return bus.
Should I stay Sunday night?
Yes, if the budget allows it. It removes checkout pressure, luggage storage problems and a rushed trip immediately after the marathon.
Is CIM really downhill?
It has a net drop of 366 feet, but it also has rolling hills. Past runners regularly warn against racing the early descents too hard.
