Best Running Shoes for Kids With Wide Feet in 2026: 4 True Wide Picks
If your child has wide feet, start with shoes that are actually sold in a wide width. A roomy looking toe box is not the same thing as a Wide or XW size, and buying a longer shoe just to gain space can leave too much room in front of the toes.

New Balance DynaSoft Reveal v4 BOA Wide
For a grade school child who needs a true Wide running shoe and an easy closure, this is my first pick. My older son wears the Reveal v4 BOA now, and we have already moved up to the next size after a full season of use.

How this list is different: I only included kids shoes that currently offer an actual Wide or XW option from the manufacturer. I left out shoes that simply feel roomy in one child’s foot. Our strongest first hand experience is with the New Balance Reveal v4 BOA, which my older son wears. The other picks are researched recommendations with width availability checked against current New Balance and Saucony listings.
Wide is not the same as high volume. Some children need more width across the forefoot. Others also have a fuller foot through the top and instep. If a Wide shoe leaves pressure marks across the top of the foot, moving to a longer size may not fix the problem. Look at the opening, tongue and closure as well as the width label.
Quick decision
Which Wide Kids Running Shoe Should You Try First?
Grade school runner who needs Wide
Start with the New Balance Reveal v4 BOA. It comes in Wide and gives kids a closure they can adjust themselves.
Very wide feet or XW needed
Try the New Balance Rave Run v2. New Balance sells it in Standard, Wide and XW.
Younger child who needs easy on and off
Look at the New Balance 625 Hook & Loop. It comes in Wide and XW with stretchy bungee laces and a top strap.
Little kid who needs a Saucony alternative
Compare the Saucony Ride 10 Jr. It is currently offered in Wide. Saucony has also listed XW variants, but I would check the live selector rather than count on XW stock.

The 4 Best Running Shoes for Kids With Wide Feet
The list is short on purpose. If a current model does not have a real Wide or XW choice, it is not here.
Best overall Wide · family tested
New Balance DynaSoft Reveal v4 BOA

Width: Standard and Wide
Sizes: Little Kid and Big Kid
Closure: BOA dial
Best for: school, regular running and independent fit
My older son wears the Reveal v4 BOA, so this is the shoe on the page I know best. Both of my boys chose New Balance as their outdoor runners, and we have now bought the next size up after a full season.
The BOA dial is the part that makes the shoe especially useful at our house. Press and turn to tighten it, then pull the dial to release. My son can adjust the fit himself instead of pushing his foot into a tied shoe and crushing the heel.
New Balance sells the Reveal v4 BOA in a real Wide size for both Little Kid and Big Kid ranges. The shoe uses DynaSoft cushioning, a mesh and synthetic upper, no sew construction and a rubber outsole. My older son has also run a 5K and a duathlon in his pair.
If your child needs XW, move to the Rave Run v2 or 625 instead.
What works
- True Wide size
- Easy BOA adjustment
- Little Kid and Big Kid sizing
- Comfortable in our family use
- Rubber outsole has held up well for us
Watch for
- No XW option
- BOA adds hardware some kids may not want
- Wide stock can vary by colour
Best XW option
New Balance Rave Run v2

Width: Standard, Wide and XW
Sizes: toddler through Big Kid ranges
Upper: synthetic and mesh
Best for: very wide feet and fuller feet
If Wide is still too tight, the Rave Run v2 is the next model to check. New Balance offers Standard, Wide and XW, and its fit information flags the XW version for very wide feet and very high foot height.
That last point matters. Some kids do not just have a broad forefoot. Their feet are also fuller through the top. Parents often describe this as a chunky or high instep foot, and a regular Wide can still feel tight over the tongue.
The Rave Run v2 uses lightweight EVA cushioning, a synthetic and mesh upper, a rubber outsole and extra material around the toe where kids tend to wear shoes out first.
Try the exact size before assuming XW is right. A very wide shoe that is loose at the heel is not a better fit.
What works
- Wide and XW choices
- Useful for very wide feet
- Mesh upper gives some flexibility
- Rubber outsole for active use
Watch for
- Check heel fit in XW
- More basic cushioning than premium trainers
- Stock changes across size ranges
Best easy on Wide and XW
New Balance 625 Hook & Loop

Width: Standard, Wide and XW
Sizes: Little Kid and Big Kid versions
Closure: bungee laces plus hook and loop strap
Best for: younger kids who need width and independence
The 625 solves two problems at once. It comes in Wide and XW, and a child does not need to tie traditional laces to get a secure fit.
The opening uses stretchy bungee laces with a hook and loop strap over the top. That gives parents more adjustment than a fixed slip on shoe, and it is easier for a younger child to manage at school.
New Balance uses Fresh Foam cushioning, a breathable mesh upper and rubber on the outsole for traction and durability. The Little Kid model is listed from size 10.5 through 3, with both Wide and XW choices.
If your child has a high volume foot, pay attention to where the strap lands. A shoe can be wide enough at the forefoot and still feel tight across the top.
What works
- Wide and XW choices
- Easy school friendly closure
- Fresh Foam cushioning
- Breathable mesh upper
Watch for
- Strap fit matters on a high instep
- Not as adjustable as full laces
- Check that the heel stays secure
Best Saucony option for little kids
Saucony Ride 10 Jr.

Width: Medium and Wide currently offered
Sizes: Little Kid 4 through 10
Closure: alternate closure
Best for: preschool and younger school age runners
New Balance is not the only place to look. Saucony is another brand parents with wide footed kids bring up often, and the Ride 10 Jr. gives younger children a genuine Wide choice.
Saucony currently includes the Ride 10 Jr. in its kids Wide collection. Its product data has also shown XW variants, but current XW availability is inconsistent, so I would only promise parents the Wide option and check the live selector before ordering.
The shoe uses a leather and mesh upper, a cushioned EVA midsole and non marking traction pods. It also has an alternate closure, which is easier for little kids than full traditional laces.
For a child still in Little Kid sizing, compare it directly with the New Balance 625. Try both if you can. Wide feet are not all shaped the same.
What works
- Real Wide option
- Current Wide option from Saucony
- Easy closure for younger kids
- Breathable leather and mesh upper
Watch for
- Only for Little Kid sizing
- XW should not be assumed to be in stock
- Stock varies by colour and size

What parents keep running into
What I Found in Parent Forums About Wide Kids Shoes
I read parent discussions in r/Parenting, r/toddlers and r/widefeet while researching this page. A few problems came up again and again.
- New Balance and Saucony keep coming up for true width choices. Parents looking for very wide sports shoes repeatedly mention New Balance XW and Saucony XW rather than simply choosing a brand that feels roomy.
- Width and foot height are different problems. Some parents describe shoes fitting across the toes but pinching over the top of the foot. A Wide label alone does not guarantee enough room through the instep.
- Sizing up for width can create a new problem. Parents report needing a much longer size just to get enough width, which leaves too much empty space at the toe. That is why I limited this guide to models with actual Wide or XW sizes.
- Not every model from a wide friendly brand fits the same. Brand name alone is not enough. The exact upper, opening and heel fit still matter.
Forum comments are individual experiences, not lab tests. I used them to identify recurring shopping problems, then checked the actual width options against the manufacturers before a shoe made this list.
Before ordering
Wide, XW or Just More Toe Room?
Choose Wide when
A standard shoe presses along the sides of the forefoot, leaves red marks or makes the toes crowd together even when the length is correct.
Try XW when
Wide still squeezes the foot, your child regularly spills over the side of the midsole, or a fitter has measured them beyond a normal Wide.
Think about foot volume when
The shoe looks wide enough from above but leaves pressure across the top of the foot. A more adjustable opening or closure may matter as much as the width.
Do not just size up
Going longer to gain width can leave the shoe sloppy at the heel and too long at the toes. Find the correct length first, then choose the width that fits that length.

How to Check a Wide Running Shoe on Your Child
- Measure both feet while standing. Fit the larger foot if one is longer or wider.
- Check the toe room. The American Podiatric Medical Association recommends about 10 to 15 mm in front of the longest toe, with the toe box at least as wide as the widest part of the foot.
- Look at the sides. The upper should not bulge sharply over the edge of the midsole or leave obvious pressure marks.
- Check the top of the foot. A strap, BOA cable or tongue should feel secure without digging into the instep.
- Watch the heel. Extra width in front should not mean the heel slides up and down.
- Have them jog. A shoe can feel fine while sitting and wrong as soon as your child runs and changes direction.
- Check again as they grow. Children’s feet change quickly, and a Wide that fits now may not be the right size or width next season.
The Canadian Paediatric Society also recommends a snug heel, room at the toes and trying shoes on before buying when possible. If your child has persistent foot pain, numbness, recurring blisters or a gait concern, talk with a qualified health professional instead of trying to solve it with a wider shoe alone.

Parent questions
Kids Wide Running Shoe FAQ
What brands make kids running shoes in Wide and XW?
New Balance currently has the strongest selection among true kids running models, including the Rave Run v2 and 625 in Wide and XW. Saucony also sells kids models in Wide, with some XW options. Check the exact model rather than assuming every shoe from either brand comes in the same widths.
Should I size up if my child has wide feet?
Not just to gain width. A shoe that is too long can slide at the heel and leave too much room in front. Fit the length first, then move to Wide or XW if the standard width is too tight.
How do I know if my child needs Wide or XW?
If standard shoes squeeze the sides of the foot, start with Wide. If Wide still feels tight or your child has been measured much wider than average, compare XW. The heel still needs to stay secure in either width.
What if the shoe fits wide enough but is tight over the top?
Your child may also have a fuller foot through the instep. Look for an opening and closure that can adjust over the top of the foot. A longer shoe is not always the answer.
Are wide shoes only for kids with flat feet?
No. Width describes how the shoe fits across the foot. Flat feet and arch shape are separate issues. Many children have flat feet while they are young, and painless flat feet do not automatically require corrective footwear.
Can my child use these for cross country?
For a first season on firm courses, a comfortable running shoe can be enough. Once racing gets more serious or courses get muddy, use our kids cross country shoe guide to compare trainers, flats and spikes.
How We Chose These Wide Kids Running Shoes
I started with current kids running shoes from New Balance and Saucony, then removed every model that did not show a real Wide or XW choice. That is why this list is shorter than our general kids running shoe guide.
The New Balance Reveal v4 BOA is a current family shoe. My older son wears it, and we have already bought the next size after a full season. The Rave Run v2, 625 Hook & Loop and Saucony Ride 10 Jr. are researched picks. Their current width choices and construction were checked against manufacturer listings in September 2026.
I also reviewed parent discussions in r/Parenting, r/toddlers and r/widefeet. Those discussions were useful for spotting recurring problems such as fuller feet, sizing up too far for width and the difficulty of finding XW sports shoes. Forum comments were not used as proof that a particular shoe will fit every child.
Fit guidance was cross checked against the American Podiatric Medical Association and Canadian Paediatric Society. Both put the emphasis on proper fit rather than a specific brand.
Bottom line
If You Just Want the Short Answer
Wide grade school runner: try the New Balance Reveal v4 BOA Wide first.
Very wide or XW foot: start with the New Balance Rave Run v2.
Younger child who needs an easy closure: compare the New Balance 625 Hook & Loop.
Little Kid Saucony option: look at the Saucony Ride 10 Jr. Wide.
Do not buy extra length just to get extra width. Get the length right first, then choose the width that lets your child run without squeezing, rubbing or heel slip.
