Dates, courses and qualifying status can change. Confirm the current details on the organizer’s official site before registering or booking travel.

A simpler starting point

Which Italy marathon should you choose?

There is no single best marathon for every runner. These are useful starting points based on course style, time of year and the kind of weekend you want. Use the race finder and official links above for the final decision.

For a faster road race

Milan Marathon is the clearest place to begin. The organizer describes a fast city course. Ravenna and Pisa also belong on a flat-road shortlist, but weather, turns and crowding still matter.

For a landmark-filled weekend

Rome, Venice and Florence combine a marathon with a major sightseeing trip. Plan your hotel around race logistics, not only the tourist centre.

For a later race in the year

Pisa Marathon is scheduled for December. It can give you more autumn training time, but check holiday travel, daylight, weather and the current race timetable before booking.

For art and a smaller-city feel

Ravenna Marathon City of Art passes a group of UNESCO-listed monuments. It may suit runners who want a destination race without choosing Rome, Milan or Venice.

For southern Italy

Neapolis Marathon puts the race in Naples rather than the better-known northern and central cities. Review the route, time limit and start instructions on the official site.

For a spring marathon

Start with Rome in March or Milan in April. A spring race usually means doing your main training block through winter, which may be a benefit or a drawback depending on where you live.

How to choose an Italian marathon

1. Pick the season

Choose autumn, winter or spring based on when you can train consistently.

2. Check the course

Flat does not always mean easy. Look at turns, surface, elevation and likely congestion.

3. Read the entry rules

Confirm medical, membership and paperwork requirements before paying.

4. Price the full trip

Add the entry fee, flights or trains, hotel, meals and local transport.

If your main goal is a personal best, compare the Italy races with our fastest marathons in Europe. If your dates are more important than the country, use the wider Europe Marathon Calendar.

Race-week planning

Planning an Italy marathon trip

The most convenient hotel for sightseeing is not always the easiest hotel for race morning. Before booking, compare the start, finish, expo and transport plan. Some races start and finish in different areas, while road closures can change the normal route across a city.

  • Entry documents: Some Italian competitive races may require federation membership, a Runcard, a medical certificate or other event-specific paperwork. The rules can differ by race and athlete category.
  • Bib pickup: Do not assume you can collect your bib on race morning. Check the expo location, opening hours and identification requirements.
  • Hotel location: Find the actual start and finish on a map. Check the earliest public transport and the organiser’s shuttle instructions.
  • Arrival day: Leave enough time for bib pickup and travel delays. Avoid turning the day before the marathon into a long walking tour.
  • Food: Pick a hotel area where you can get the familiar pre-race foods you have already tested in training.
  • Flexible bookings: Race dates and personal plans can change. Compare cancellation rules before choosing the lowest price.

Important exception: Requirements written for Italian residents may not be the same as those for runners who live abroad. Use the exact rules for your nationality, residency and membership status, and contact the organiser if the wording is unclear.

Italy marathon calendar FAQ

When is marathon season in Italy?

Many of the major Italian city marathons take place from October to December or from March to April. The best month for you depends on your training window, travel plans and preferred race conditions.

What is the best marathon in Italy for a first marathon?

There is no automatic winner. A first-time marathoner should compare the time limit, course profile, field size, travel difficulty, aid stations and start-line instructions. A famous destination race can be exciting, but a simpler trip may reduce race-week stress.

Do I need a medical certificate to run a marathon in Italy?

It depends on the event, athlete category and current rules. Some races may require a medical certificate, federation membership, Runcard or other documents. Read the official regulations for the exact race before entering.

Are marathons in Italy Boston qualifiers?

Some may be eligible, but the label in this finder is only a shortlist tool. Confirm the current certified course and qualifying rules with the race organiser and the B.A.A. before registering for a Boston-qualifying attempt.

How early should I book an Italy marathon trip?

Book only after you understand the entry process and know you have a race place. Popular races and central hotels can fill early. If you reserve far ahead, compare change and cancellation terms before choosing a non-refundable rate.

How current are the race dates on this page?

The calendar currently includes all 38 non-cancelled full road marathons from FIDAL’s latest 2026 national calendar and 12 dated 2027 editions published in FIDAL’s Gold, Silver and Bronze request list. The final complete 2027 national calendar has not been published yet. Schedules and registration details can change, so the official event website should always be your final check.
