How to use this USA half marathon calendar

  1. Choose your non-negotiables. Start with a month, state or region. Then add a course or race-goal filter if you still have too many options.
  2. Build a shortlist. Select two or three races and tap Compare selected to review the key details side by side.
  3. Verify before paying. Open the official link and check entry status, cutoff, course map, packet pickup, transportation and refund or transfer rules.

The labels such as fast, scenic and first-timer are shortlist tools, not guarantees. Weather, crowding, turns, hills, altitude and travel fatigue can change how a course feels.

Before you register: A date in this calendar does not mean entries are still available. Popular events can sell out, use a drawing or change their start procedures. Treat the organiser’s current page and your registration confirmation as the final word.

This is a curated calendar of established 13.1-mile races, not a scraped list of every small event. It includes major city weekends, fast road races, themed events, scenic destinations and strong regional favourites. At the time of our latest review, the finder contained 65 races across 25 states and Washington, D.C.

Last researched: October 3, 2026. The current finder has 58 dated race records and seven marked TBA. Dates are added from official organiser or authorised registration pages. We do not estimate a future date from last year’s calendar. A TBA label means a verified date had not yet been added at the last database check, so always open the official source for the newest announcement.

How to choose the right U.S. half marathon

The biggest race is not automatically the best one for you. A good choice fits your training window, expected pace, travel budget and preferred experience. Use these questions to narrow the list.

Is this your first half marathon?

Start with the First half marathon filter. Then look for clear logistics, regular aid stations, a manageable course and a cutoff that leaves room beyond your expected finish. Mesa, Flying Pig, Shamrock, Cowtown, Cleveland, Missoula and Richmond are among the races worth comparing, but the simplest local trip may still be your best first experience.

Are you chasing a faster time?

Use the Fast/PB filter to investigate Houston, Mesa, Shamrock, Eugene, Philadelphia Distance Run, Wineglass, Indianapolis Monumental and New Bedford. Do not stop at the elevation label. A potentially fast course also needs enough road space, suitable pacing groups, manageable turns and weather you can race well in.

Do you want a major-event atmosphere?

United Airlines NYC Half, RBC Brooklyn Half, Indy Mini, Chicago 13.1, Houston, Flying Pig and the runDisney weekends offer the scale many runners want from a goal race. Larger events can also bring crowded corrals, security rules, earlier sellouts, longer pre-race waits and higher hotel prices.

Is the trip as important as the finish time?

Try the Scenic or Destination filters for Miami, Las Vegas, Honolulu, Napa to Sonoma, Monterey Bay, San Francisco, Maui and Kauai. Mountain and high-elevation destinations such as Denver, Boulder and Salt Lake City deserve extra thought if you normally train close to sea level.

Does the cutoff match your expected pace?

Cutoffs vary. During our latest check, the B.A.A. Half and Garry Bjorklund Half listed three hours. Napa to Sonoma listed three hours 30 minutes, while the Detroit International Half listed a last-chance pace based on a four-hour finish. runDisney listed a 16-minute-per-mile requirement. These are current examples, not permanent rules. Recheck the official page before entering, especially if you plan to walk sections.

Drawings, sellouts and special entry rules

Entry method can matter as much as race date. Do not book a non-refundable trip until you understand how runners get into the event.

  • Drawing or guaranteed entry: The United Airlines NYC Half offers a non-guaranteed drawing and several guaranteed-entry paths. NYRR also uses drawing and qualifying processes for the RBC Brooklyn Half. Applying is not the same as having a confirmed place.
  • Fast first-come sellouts: Garry Bjorklund registration opens on a published date and can fill very quickly. The organiser reported that its 2027 half marathon sold out after registration opened, with charity and other limited paths available later.
  • Charity entries: Some sold-out races retain places through approved charities. Check the required fundraising amount, deadlines and what happens if you do not reach the target.
  • Cross-border documentation: The Detroit Free Press International Half crosses between the United States and Canada. Its official document rules require an accepted WHTI-compliant document, and the race states that a U.S. REAL ID is not a border-crossing document.
  • Transfer and refund rules: Many entries are non-refundable. Some races allow an official transfer or deferral, while others prohibit both. Never buy a bib informally unless the organiser provides an approved transfer process.

When is half marathon season in the USA?

The United States does not have one national race season. Winter can be ideal in Florida, Arizona, Texas and coastal California while northern routes are dealing with snow. Spring and fall have the deepest calendars, but elevation, humidity and regional storm patterns still matter.

January and February: warm-weather destinations

Houston, Miami, Mesa, Walt Disney World, Surf City, Carlsbad, Las Vegas, Austin, Gasparilla and Cowtown give runners many winter targets. “Warm weather” is not a guarantee of mild race conditions. Southern humidity, desert temperature swings and an unusually hot morning can still change your pacing plan.

March to May: the largest spring window

NYC, Atlanta, Virginia Beach, Honolulu, Louisville, Eugene, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Brooklyn and Cleveland are part of a busy spring calendar. Northern runners may need to complete key workouts through snow and ice, while southern races can already feel hot.

June to August: fewer races and more weather risk

Chicago 13.1, Garry Bjorklund, Rock ’n’ Roll San Diego, Missoula, Napa to Sonoma, the San Francisco halves and America’s Finest City provide summer options. Check start time, expected heat and whether the route is exposed. A cool coastal reputation does not guarantee cool race day.

September to December: deep fall racing

Philadelphia Distance Run, Kauai, Boulderthon, Long Beach, Wineglass, Indianapolis Monumental, Richmond, Philadelphia and Monterey Bay are among the fall choices. Some events can be warm and humid; others can turn cold or windy. Train for a range rather than one ideal forecast.

Check conditions, not just climate averages. The National Weather Service warns that heat can strain the body and worsen existing health conditions. Use AirNow for current and forecast Air Quality Index information and its wildfire smoke map. Follow the race organiser and local authorities when heat, smoke, lightning, hurricanes or other severe weather affect an event.

USA race travel checklist

A destination half marathon can cost far more than the entry fee. Complete this check before you make non-refundable bookings.

  1. Secure your entry first. A drawing application, waitlist position or hotel reservation does not mean you are registered.
  2. Read the packet-pickup rules. If race-day pickup is unavailable, your flight or drive must leave enough time for the expo. Check whether another person can collect your packet.
  3. Map both the start and finish. Point-to-point races can create excellent courses and complicated mornings. Garry Bjorklund says official buses are the only permitted way for participants to reach its start. Napa to Sonoma says there is no parking at its start line and directs runners to its shuttle plan.
  4. Check the time zone. Confirm local packet-pickup hours, alarm time and start time. Arriving earlier can help with travel delays and sleep disruption.
  5. Use flexible bookings where practical. Race dates, flight schedules and severe weather can change. Read the race cancellation policy and your hotel’s deadline.
  6. Keep essentials with you. Put shoes, socks, race clothing, medication and hard-to-replace fuel in your carry-on. Use the interactive half marathon gear checklist before leaving home.

Coming from Canada?

Check the Government of Canada’s current United States travel advice before you book. Entry documents differ for air and land travel, and border rules can change. The Government of Canada also recommends travel health insurance even for a short U.S. trip because a provincial or territorial plan may cover little or none of the cost of care abroad.

Also plan for U.S. dollars, possible card conversion fees, mobile roaming and race information shown in miles and Fahrenheit. If you use kilometre pace, save your converted targets before race morning rather than trying to calculate them in the corral.

Turn a race date into a realistic plan

Once you have a shortlist, count backwards from race day. Leave time to build gradually, recover between harder weeks and adapt when weather or travel interrupts training. A well-matched plan matters more than choosing the most famous race.

Gear that solves an actual problem

You do not need an entirely new kit for a destination race. Focus on comfortable long-distance running shoes, blister-resistant running socks, familiar energy gels if your plan calls for fuel, and a secure running belt if you need to carry a phone, room key or approved travel document. Nothing new belongs on your body or in your stomach on race morning.

How we research and maintain this calendar

Runner-reviewed and carefully researched. RunningGearLab founder Justin has trained for running and triathlon events since 2013 and later completed a full-distance Ironman. That experience informs the planning advice on this page. It does not mean we have personally run every listed event, so we keep first-hand experience separate from researched race facts.

  • Selection: We prioritize established races with broad runner interest, reliable public information or clear regional importance. This is a useful national shortlist, not a claim to list every U.S. half marathon.
  • Coverage: The current finder contains events in 25 states plus Washington, D.C. It intentionally mixes large national events with respected regional races rather than filling every state with a weak choice.
  • Sources: Dates and event details are checked against official organiser sites or authorised registration pages. A date stays blank until it has been verified and added from one of those sources rather than estimated from an earlier year.
  • Labels: Course and goal labels help readers build a shortlist. They are editorial aids, not official certifications or guaranteed outcomes.
  • Commercial independence: A race does not receive a better label or position because it offers a hotel or shopping commission.
  • Corrections: Race information changes. If you spot an outdated date, broken official link or missing established event, send us the source so we can review it. Learn more about RunningGearLab and our approach.

USA half marathon FAQ

Which USA half marathons are good for a first race?

There is no single best first half marathon. Look for clear logistics, dependable course support, a cutoff that fits your expected pace and a date that leaves enough training time. Use the First half marathon filter, then compare travel, elevation and cutoff details on the official sites.

What are some fast half marathons in the United States?

Houston, Mesa, Shamrock, Eugene, Philadelphia Distance Run, Wineglass, Indianapolis Monumental and New Bedford are useful races to investigate with the Fast/PB filter. No course guarantees a personal best. Weather, turns, congestion, travel and your preparation still matter.

Are all the race dates confirmed?

No. A full date means a published date had been verified and added during the stated database review. A TBA label means the next date was not yet verified in the finder. The organiser may have posted an update since that check, so always open the official source before registering or booking travel.

Does this calendar include every U.S. half marathon?

No. The United States has far more races than one useful page should try to hold. We concentrate on popular national events, established destination races and strong regional choices with enough official information to research properly.

Can walkers enter USA half marathons?

Some events welcome walkers, but policies differ. Compare your expected total time with the official cutoff and any intermediate checkpoint pace. Check whether the course reopens to traffic and whether aid, timing and finish-line services continue after the cutoff.

Which popular half marathons use a drawing?

The United Airlines NYC Half and RBC Brooklyn Half are notable drawing events, with additional guaranteed or charity paths for some runners. Entry systems can change, so use the official organiser’s current entry page rather than relying on last year’s process.

What are the best months for a U.S. half marathon?

March through May and September through November have the broadest geographic choice. Winter is strong in warmer states. Summer has fewer options and requires closer attention to heat, humidity, altitude and air quality.

How early should I book a race hotel?

Book after your entry is confirmed and you understand the start, finish and shuttle plan. Refundable rooms near practical transport can disappear months ahead for large races. Check whether day-before packet pickup means you need an extra night.

How far is a half marathon?

A half marathon is 13.1094 miles, usually shortened to 13.1 miles, or 21.0975 kilometres. Your GPS watch may show slightly more because of weaving, corners and signal error.

How does the race comparison tool work?

Select two or three race cards and choose Compare selected. The comparison helps you review dates, locations, course notes and goals together. It is a shortlist tool, so use each official race link for final entry rules and logistics.
