In 2021, like most of us, you want to get back to normal. But your (ultrarunning) normal is not likely what most are talking about!

One of the issues last year was figuring out which races were on, not to mention which ones you wanted to race. At runninggearlab we put together a list of popular and challenging races for fall 2021 in the USA.
Each race is challenging, well rated, and unique, but which race to choose? Check out the races below to learn more.

If you’re considering ultra racing for the first time, make sure to read our ultimate guide to ultra running.

Distances 135 Miles – 5k

Where is it? The Outlaw course is located in the Robbers Cave State Park near Wilburton, Oklahoma

Why consider the Outlaw 100?

The Outlaw 100 race is unique because it’s associated with Outlaw names like Jesse James, Belle Star, and the Youngers.

Runners can look forward to scenic views with bluffs overlooking three large lakes, rock formations, and caves to be enjoyed as you navigate the mainly single track, forested, technical terrain with an abundance of rocks and roots.

Runners should consider the possibility of cold weather conditions, and make sure to train in similar weather with the proper cold weather gear.

Distances 100 Miles

Where is it? The Grindstone takes place on trails in Virginia’s Allegheny Mountains in October.

Why consider the Grindstone 100?

Grit, endurance, temporary loss of sanity are what it takes to finish this race. Grindstone is one of North Americas 100 mile races with an evening start. Running through the night is guaranteed to test your ability to handle sleep deprivation.

While the cutoff time is longer than some other 100 mile races, don’t let that fool you, you still need to climb 23,000 feet of elevation gain! Don’t miss this unique opportunity for anyone hoping to run Hardrock or Western States.

Chuckanut 50K

Distance 50 Kilometers

Where is it? Fairhaven Washington

Why consider the Chuckanut?

The Chuckanut is a long-running mountain ultra race. Runners get to traverse the beautiful Pacific Northwest at it’s finest, even if you don’t feel your finest by the end of it. At 50km, with the technical trails, mud and climbing, it’s a perfect race for those looking to get into trail running and move past the marathon length race.

The long-standing nature and community around the race is another feature that draws runners back every year.

The race has been around since 1993 and due to COVID the team got creative with the 2021 virtual run. You can still sign up for the 2021 March race and earn priority registration for 2022 (this race sells out in a few hours!)

Why consider the Mines of Spain Ultra Race?

The Mines of Spain race is a race to remember. It’s no wonder this race has a waiting list. Runners will enjoy steep technical single track, wide rolling dirt and prairie double track with a multitude of other fun and scenic sections mixed in! This course is designed for first timers or veterans alike.

The race takes place in October, which in Iowa means cool weather, and a chance for near freezing temperatures. Training early in the morning or at night in the summer will help you get used to cooler temperatures.

Distance 100Km

Where is it? South Pass City, WY

Why consider Run the Red

Run the red is a mix of single-track, double-track and dirt road. Runners should look forward to a technical race including 3,500’ feet of gain and loss. The race has a 19 hour cutoff, which means this is a great race for ultra runners at all levels.

Not only is the race challenging, you get to connect with the most wild and threatened landscapes in Wyoming. The Northern Red Desert is home to nine “wilderness study areas”— large, wild, roadless tracts determined to contain some of our nation’s best remote opportunities for solitude and recreation.

Make sure to bring your trail running gaiters to keep sand out of your shoes!

Distance 3 day stage race 30k / 20k / 15k

Where is it? Oakridge, OR

Why try the Triple summit challenge?

If a one day race is already under your belt, or belt buckle, try a new challenge this year! Do something unique and join the growing community of stage trail racers. The Oakridge Triple Summit Challenge is the only three day stage trail running race in the state of Oregon!

This is a true stage race like the Tour De France, each day you’ll tackle a new climb challenge, hence the “peak” part of the challenge. Be prepared for some serious climbing over the three days. The Triple Summit Challenge one of the premiere trail races in the country, and only growing in popularity.

Cloudsplitter 100

Distance(s) 100Miles, 100km, 50km, 25km

Where is it? Norton, Virginia

Why consider the Cloudsplitter?

The Cloudsplitter races wind along rugged, rocky and remote trails within Jefferson National Forest. Virginia in the fall offers the running weather we all love, but if you’re training effectively for this race you’ll train in all conditions. Rain, sun, even snow could be possible. (Pack your warm running socks)

The cloudsplitter gets you high in the Central Appalachia mountains, home to some of the greatest diversity of plant life in the Commonwealth of Virginia. While the views are beautiful and the experience will be unforgettable, the 40 hour cutoff time means this race is not for the feint of heart. Are you up for the challenge?

Tahoe Rim Trail Endurance Runs

Distance(s) 100 miles, 50 miles, 55km

Where is it? Northeast side of Lake Tahoe

Why consider the Tahoe Rim Trail Race?

The TRT endurance run is summed up beautifully with “a glimpse of heaven…a taste of hell”. For any runner experienced in ultra distances, the slogan is extremely accurate – and exactly why we all keep going back. (Do I mean Heaven or Hell?)

This race is not a beginners ultra race. You need to meet strict qualifying conditions, and rightly so. Throughout the race you ascend approximately 18,000 ft. The 35 hour cutoff means approximately 20 minute miles are the maximum you should plan for. While challenging, there is a reason for the glimpse of heaven. Take a look at their videos if you dare.

Conclusion

Thanks for reading, continue your research by checking out the websites and videos from the various races. It all starts by signing up!
