How to use this Canada half marathon calendar
- Set your non-negotiables. Choose the month or province first. Then add a course or goal filter if you still have too many choices.
- Build a shortlist. Select two or three races and tap Compare selected to see the important details side by side.
- Verify before paying. Open the official link and check the date, entry status, start time, cutoff, course map, kit pickup and refund or transfer policy.
The labels such as fast, scenic and first-timer are useful starting points, not promises. Weather, crowding, elevation changes and your own preparation can matter more than a label.
Before you register: A date in this calendar does not mean entries are still available. Popular events can sell out, change courses or adjust their start procedures. Treat the organiser’s current page and your registration confirmation as the final word. If sold out you may be able to find someones bib that can no longer race.
This is a curated calendar of established Canadian 21.1 km races, not every small event. At the time of our latest review, the finder contained 32 races across nine provinces. Last researched: October 3, 2026
How to choose the right Canadian half marathon
A famous race is not automatically the best race for you. The best choice fits your training window, travel budget, preferred course and realistic finish time. Use these four questions to narrow the calendar.
Is this your first half marathon?
Start with the First half marathon goal filter. Then look for simple logistics, frequent aid stations, a clearly marked course and enough time before the sweep vehicle arrives. A race close to home often removes the stress of flights, unfamiliar food and a hotel the night before your first 21.1 km.
Cutoffs vary more than many new runners expect. During our latest check, Ottawa listed four hours for the half marathon, Toronto Waterfront and Victoria listed three hours 30 minutes, and BMO Vancouver listed three hours. These are useful examples, not permanent rules. Recheck the current event page before entering, especially if you plan to walk sections.
Are you chasing a faster time?
Try the Fast/PB filter, but inspect more than the elevation label. A potentially quick course also needs manageable turns, enough road space, suitable pacing groups and weather you can handle. Lévis, Toronto Waterfront, Hamilton Road2Hope, First Half Vancouver and Fredericton are among the races worth comparing for a time goal. Your fastest option may be the one with the easiest travel and the most familiar climate.
Do you want a major race-weekend atmosphere?
Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver, Montréal, Calgary and Halifax offer the scale and energy many runners want from a goal weekend. Large fields can mean more spectators, pacing groups and event support. They can also mean earlier sellouts, crowded corrals, higher hotel prices and longer walks before or after the race.
Is scenery or a destination weekend the priority?
Use the Scenic or Destination goal filters to compare Victoria, Niagara Falls, Banff, Whistler, Kelowna, Québec City, PEI and the Annapolis Valley. Check the elevation profile and transport plan before assuming a beautiful route will be easy. Mountain settings, point-to-point courses and exposed waterfront sections can change how the race feels.
When is half marathon season in Canada?
Canada does not have one uniform race season. Coastal British Columbia can host road races while much of the Prairies is still dealing with snow and ice. Southern Ontario and Quebec have busy spring and fall calendars, while Atlantic races often make the location part of the weekend.
January to March: winter specialists
Winter events such as Winnipeg’s Hypothermic Half and Vancouver’s First Half can give experienced cold-weather runners an early target. Conditions may include ice, snow, wind or slush. Choose footwear for the actual surface, keep effort flexible and learn the organiser’s severe-weather policy.
April and May: the biggest spring window
This is one of the busiest periods, with races such as 21K de Montréal, Mississauga, Toronto, BMO Vancouver, Fredericton, Blue Nose, Ottawa, Calgary and Saskatchewan. The tradeoff is winter training. Build extra flexibility into the plan if snow, poor footing or extreme cold may interrupt key workouts.
June to August: summer goals
The Manitoba Marathon Half, Whistler Half, Vancouver Half and Edmonton Half create options after the spring rush. Heat and humidity can raise effort even when your pace is unchanged. Practise drinking and fuelling during training, and be ready to slow down if race-day conditions are warmer than expected.
September to November: a deep fall calendar
Canada Army Run, Queen City, Victoria, Montréal, Toronto Waterfront, PEI, WFPS, Niagara Falls and Hamilton Road2Hope are among the established fall choices. Fall can bring good racing temperatures, but daylight, wind and sudden cold still deserve attention.
Check conditions, not just the calendar. Environment and Climate Change Canada’s WeatherCAN provides forecasts, alerts and Air Quality Health Index information. Health Canada’s wildfire-smoke guidance advises people to monitor local air quality and reduce or stop strenuous outdoor activity if smoke causes symptoms. Follow the organiser and local authorities when heat, smoke, storms or extreme cold affect an event.
A Winnipeg runner’s view of the calendar
RunningGearLab is based in Winnipeg, so we wanted this guide to include strong regional races, not only events with international marketing budgets. The WFPS Half Marathon is an established local fall goal, the Manitoba Marathon Half is part of a large hometown weekend, and the Hypothermic Half gives winter runners a very different challenge.
For Prairie runners, the training season can matter as much as the course. A May race may require the longest runs during ice and deep cold. A June race can bring a sudden jump in heat. An October race gives you more summer training but may be windy or sharply cooler on race morning. Compare the whole training block, not only the race-day forecast.
Canadian race travel checklist
A half marathon trip can become expensive quickly. Complete this check before you make non-refundable bookings.
- Secure the race entry first. A hotel reservation does not protect you from a sold-out field, lottery or qualification rule.
- Read the kit-pickup rules. Some events require pickup on the day before the race. WFPS, for example, currently states that there is no race-day kit pickup. That can add a hotel night.
- Map both the start and finish. They are not always in the same place. BMO Vancouver’s half starts at Queen Elizabeth Park and finishes downtown, while the Manitoba Marathon weekend centres its logistics around the University of Manitoba and Princess Auto Stadium.
- Check early-morning transport. Look for organiser shuttles, road closures, transit start times, parking reservations and the walk from drop-off to your corral.
- Use flexible bookings where practical. Race dates, travel plans and weather can change. Read the event’s cancellation policy and your hotel’s deadline.
- Keep race essentials with you. If you fly, put shoes, socks, race clothing, medication and hard-to-replace fuel in your carry-on. Use the interactive half marathon gear checklist before you leave.
Turn a race date into a realistic plan
Once you have a shortlist, count backwards from race day. Leave enough time to build gradually, recover between harder weeks and adapt when Canadian weather disrupts a workout. A sensible plan is more valuable than choosing the most famous race.
- Start with the half marathon training plan, or build around your schedule with the running training plan creator.
- Turn a finish-time goal into a sustainable pace with the race pace calculator, then create kilometre-by-kilometre targets with the running split calculator.
- Plan layers for the forecast with the running outfit calculator. Bring a disposable warm layer for a cold start only where the event permits it.
- Use the half marathon gear checklist for training, race morning and travel. Test every important item before race day.
Gear that earns its place
You do not need a new kit for every race. Solve the needs you actually have: comfortable long-distance running shoes, blister-resistant running socks, familiar energy gels if your plan calls for fuel, and a secure running belt if the course or travel plan requires you to carry items. Nothing new belongs on your body or in your stomach on race morning.
How we research and maintain this calendar
Runner-reviewed and carefully researched. RunningGearLab founder Justin has trained for running and triathlon events since 2013 and later completed a full-distance Ironman. That experience informs the planning advice on this page. It does not mean we have personally run every listed race, so we keep first-hand experience separate from researched race facts.
- Selection: We prioritize established events with broad runner interest, reliable public information or clear regional importance. This is a useful national shortlist, not a claim to include every Canadian half marathon.
- Coverage: The current finder includes races in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. We will add strong events from other provinces or territories when they meet the same standard.
- Sources: Dates and event details are checked against official organiser sites or authorised registration pages. We leave a date blank when the organiser has not published the next edition instead of estimating it from a past pattern.
- Labels: Course and goal labels help readers build a shortlist. They are editorial aids, not official certifications or guaranteed outcomes.
- Corrections: Race information changes. If you spot an outdated date, broken official link or missing established event, send us the source so we can review it. Learn more about RunningGearLab and our approach.
Canada half marathon FAQ
Which Canadian half marathons are good for a first race?
There is no single best first half marathon. Look for clear logistics, dependable course support, a cutoff that fits your expected pace and a date that leaves enough training time. Use the First half marathon filter, then compare travel, course and cutoff details on the official sites.
What is the fastest half marathon in Canada?
Course labels cannot guarantee a personal best. Lévis, Toronto Waterfront, Hamilton Road2Hope, First Half Vancouver and Fredericton are useful races to investigate with the Fast/PB filter. Compare elevation, turns, crowd size, weather history and travel fatigue before choosing.
Are all the race dates confirmed?
No. A full date means we found a published date on an official or authorised source during the stated review. “Next date not announced” means an established race had not yet published its next edition. Always reconfirm before registering or booking travel.
Does this list include every half marathon in Canada?
No. It is a curated list of popular, established and regionally useful races. Very small, new or poorly documented events may not appear. The finder currently covers nine provinces and will grow when additional races meet the research standard.
Can walkers enter Canadian half marathons?
Some can, but policies differ. Compare your expected total time with the official cutoff and any intermediate checkpoint times. Also check whether the course reopens to traffic and whether support continues after the cutoff. Do not rely only on a “walker-friendly” label.
What are the best months for a Canadian half marathon?
May and October have especially deep calendars, but the best month depends on where you live and when you want to train. Spring races can require winter long runs. Fall races usually allow summer training but may bring heat, smoke or a sudden cold race morning.
How early should I book a race hotel?
Book after you have confirmed your entry and understood the event schedule. For a large destination race, refundable rooms near practical transport can disappear months ahead. Check whether day-before kit pickup means you need an extra night.
How far is a half marathon?
A half marathon is 21.0975 kilometres, usually shown as 21.1 km, or about 13.1 miles. A certified road course is measured along a defined route, but your GPS watch may show slightly more because of weaving, corners and signal error.
How does the race comparison tool work?
Select two or three race cards and choose Compare selected. The comparison helps you review dates, locations, course notes and goals together. It is a shortlist tool, so use each official race link for final entry rules and logistics.
